Jurgen Van Den Broeck (born 1 February 1983 in Herentals) is a Belgian professional road bicycle racer for UCI ProTeam Lotto-Belisol. He specializes in the time trial, having been Junior (U23) World Champion in time trialing. The promise he has shown in minor stage races such as the Tour de Romandie and Eneco Tour have so far culminated in a seventh place overall in the 2008 Giro d'Italia.
In the 2009 Tour de France, he managed to climb the Alps with the best riders. Although he fell in the 4th stage, losing more than 6 minutes, his performance resulted in a 15th place in the ranking and 9th place for the polka dot jersey. Whilst a good result for him, it also spelled the end of Cadel Evans time at Omega-Pharma Lotto, with the Belgian outfit deciding that van Den Broeck would become their main man. The year after, he gained the 5th place in the 2010 Tour de France. He is the first Belgian to finish in the top 5 since Claude Criquielion in 1986. In the 2011 Tour de France, after a very hopeful first week and aiming for a GC podium spot, he had to abandon the race due to a downhill crash which left him with a pneumothorax, broken ribs and a fractured shoulder.[1]
